He has more than 15 years of research experience, has published more than 70 research and teaching articles, and taught genealogy classes and lectured in six states and provinces. He is a past-Director of the Association of Professional Genealogists and is past-president of the Minnesota Genealogical Society. and Co-Managing Editor of Minnesota Genealogist.  J. H. Fonkert, CGSM, is certified by the Board for Certification of Genealogists.

Jay’s research 18th and 19th Century American research focuses on family migrations  from Virginia and Kentucky to the Midwest. He also researches in English, Dutch, German and Scandinavian records.
